He was killed when a rocket- propelled grenade exploded during a joint operation between UK troops and the Afghan National Army north of Musa Qala, in Helmand Province.
Over the weekend tributes started pouring in for Corporal Nield who was the 143rd British soldier to be killed in Afghanistan since the start of operations there in 2001, the sixth so far this year.
Colleagues described him as a popular character with a legendary sense of humour who was proud of his Gloucestershire roots and enjoyed a glass of local cider. The say his calm West Country exterior masked "the steely professionalism of a true warrior".
Devastated parents, Peter and Sheila Nield, said: "Danny lived for the army, and was proud to serve his country. He died doing the job he loved." He also leaves behind sisters Emily and Kimberley, and brother Anthony.
The former Pittville School pupil joined the Army Cadets at the age of 13 and signed up for the "Glorious Glosters" in September 1993.
Friends were stunned when the avid Gloucester rugby fan left the army in 2004, but, two years later, he came back and passed the demanding Forward Air Controllers' Course in April 2007.
